Hannah & Jarel

‘We met in Christchurch while I was studying teaching and Jarel was there playing rugby.
‘Jarel proposed to me in front of family on Christmas Day a couple of years ago. It was the most beautiful moment – both being at Christmas and with our family all around us.
‘We knew we wanted to get married when the weather was settled, and during the school holidays – as I’m now a teacher, so April seemed like the perfect month. We wanted an outdoor venue and wanted to get married in my hometown, Nelson.
‘When it came time to choose my wedding dress, I went to two different places and tried a selection of dresses. I knew what I wanted and when I tried on my dress at Bridal Brilliance I knew it was the right one.
‘We wrote our vows together as we wanted to make promises together, and we got married in front of our family and closest friends.
‘After dinner I performed a Tau’olunga (traditional Tongan dance), as a surprise for my husband. He had no idea, which was very special!
‘His nieces also performed a dance after me. It was important to have my husband’s culture part of our day and everyone loved it and got involved.
‘My favourite photo is the one of Jarel and me holding hands underneath the autumn trees. I love the background and remembering how I felt on the day. It was the best day, I wouldn’t have changed anything.’
Q&A
Best moment?
It’s hard to pick one. Dancing in front of my husband would be one as it was a surprise for him, and sharing our day with family and friends.
Tips for other couples?
Don’t stress the small stuff, it will all fall into place. Take a moment with your significant other to soak in the day, it goes so quickly!
